惜しまれる政治家

自慢ではないけれど・・・と言うよりは寧ろ、恥ずかしいけれど政治には疎い。

なので、飽くまでも断片的なことしか把握してないのではあるけれど。それでも、今年５月の選挙で歴史的な躍進を見せたNDP党(New Democratic Party／新民主党）の党首：Jack Layton/ジャック・レイトン氏が最近、自らの前立腺癌を克服して、党の快挙に多大な貢献をしたという事実は認識していた。

漠然とではあるけれど、何だか人間的なアピールのある存在感で。

なので、癌の転移が発見され治療に専念する為、党首を辞任することになったニュースを見た際には、残念なことだなと感じてた。

政治家としての仕事を離れ、精力的に癌と戦って克服され、完治され再び復帰されるような気がしてた。

してたのに、、、余りにもあっけなくこの世を去ってしまった。

私を驚かせたのは彼の突然の死、、、だけではなく。

彼の死を巡っての尊厳ある報道とか、カナダ市民の愛情溢れる追悼の模様とか、カナダの政治家が、いかに人々に惜しまれつつこの世を去って行くか、、、と言う一つの例を目の当たりにして、ただただ純粋に感銘を受けてしまった。

彼の経歴や、彼が残した言葉の端々から、政治家としての彼の志の高さが伺えて、同時にカナダ国民の成熟した大人の社会や先進国のあるべき姿を見せつけられた感じで。

思慮深く、正直で、思いやりに溢れた言葉で綴られた彼の手紙に心を打たれる。

私の拙い日本語に訳しては申し訳ないので原文のまま。

残して置きたい、死を覚悟した彼が残した言葉の幾つか：

To Young Canadians:

All my life I have worked to make things better.  Hope and optimism have defined my political career, and I continue to be hopeful and optimistic about Canada.

As my time in political life draws to a close, I want to share with you my belief in your power to change this country and this world.

I believe in you.  Your energy, your vision, your passion for justice are exactly what this country needs today.

To Canadians who are on journeys to defeat cancer:

Please don't be discouraged that my own journey hasn't gone as well as I had hoped.  You must not lose your own hope.

Treatments and therapies have never been better in the face of this disease.  You have every reason to be optimistic, determined and focused on the future.  My only other advice is to cherish every moment with those you love at every stage of your journey, as I have done this summer.

To all Canadians:

My friends, love is better than anger.  Hope is better than fear.  Optimism is better than despair.  So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic.  And we'll change the world.
